Since the advent of Lu Wenfu’s novel Gourmet, it has been well received by the readers at home and abroad because of its rich historical and cultural connotation. The author of this paper chooses symbols of the Re-public of China according to the real history and reproduces social features in Suzhou at the special times, provid-ing the background with local color and culture for shaping the image of the gourmet. In the symbols of the Repub-lic of China, many of the old hotels were platforms displaying traditional food culture in Suzhou. Ordinary garden courtyards were spaces of elegant life styles of Wu people. The tea houses, cars and cigarettes, watches, were im-age presentations of fashion elements in the Republic of China in Suzhou. They created a narrative atmosphere for the novel and were also a growth ground breeding gourmets. Through them, we can see the essence and charm of food culture, people’s spiritual pursuit and the personality in Suzhou.
