There are chapters of Ou Yangxiu''s prose theory in CHEN Ping-yuan’s Chinese prose fiction History and Gu Bin’s Chinese Literature History.Chinese Classical Prose. These two books reflect two tendencies in ancient prose studies in China. One is that studying ancient prose from the experiences of studying modern prose and another is that studying ancient prose from the aspect of studying western prose. The former value the similarities in the ancient prose and modern prose. The latter labels the ancient prose in China with features of marginalization, adherence, dispersion and secrecy. Both of the two tendencies seem to be against the basic principles of studying Chinese ancient prose from the aspect of creation and criticism of reality. Therefore, the conclusion they have reached may not quite to the point.

Guan Ju is the first essay of Zhou Nan and the first one of The Book of Songs which belongs to one of the“four beginnings”. Scholars have various comments on the theme of it, and there are eight schools of thoughts about it, such as,“the good virtue of the concubine”,“the good virtue of TaiSi”,“the good virtue of Emperor Wen”,“the criticism of present politics”,“the women’s virtues”,“the wedding of the prince with a concubine”,“the song of marriage”and“the love song”. In the author’s view, the last one suits the theme of Guan Ju properly. It is a love song of a lad living alongside the Yellow River who falls in love with a lady who is picking banana-plant. He dreams of marrying her to live a happy life. The artistic value is prominent in the five aspects of “comparison, imagism, structuralism, rhythms, and style”. By its thematic and artistic value, this song plays an important and influential effect on later generations.
